Prof. Mohammed Al-Qahtani is the Founder and Executive Director of the Center of Excellence in Genomic Medicine Research (CEGMR, since 2007) and the Genomic Medicine Unit (GMU, since 2001) at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Prof. Al-Qahtani's research interests lies within the area of the development of molecular cytogenetic based diagnostics for cancer and other diseases. This includes interests in the research fields of genomics, cytogenetics and molecular genetics. Prof. Al-Qahtani's current research studies investigate a number of aspects, among these are: 1. To characterize and stratify the tumors studied by identification of biomarkers that can aid diagnosis or prognosis, 2. To promote the identification of molecular targets for the development of effective pharmacological intervention and 3. To identify the molecular causes of genetic diseases predominant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and to establish a relevant set of biomarkers that can aid in the diagnosis, prognosis or treatment. Prof. Al-Qahtani has more than 75 published manuscripts in outstanding international peer-reviewed journals. He attended more than 53 workshops and symposiums in Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK and USA. He also organized 5 international conferences and supervised 12 MSc and 3 PhD students. Prof. Mohammed Al Qahtani is currently a member of many international and local professional societies. He is a member of a considerable number of major national and international committees. |

Under Prof. Al-Qahtani’s management, CEGMR has been ranked as one of the best Centers of excellence in Saudi Arabia. This is due to a number of profound achievements among which: impressive 333 international publications, holding two international conferences in Genomic Medicine from one of which 98 abstracts and 24 peer-reviewed articles are published in BMC Genomics (Impact Factor 4), establishing a journal (npj Genomic Medicine) in partnership with one of the best publishers in the world, the Nature, and networking with at least 15 highly distinguished scientists from different countries through the KAU highly cited program. |
